The History & Visitors Program

First gathered in 1636 as a branch of First Church in Boston, this congregation was established in 1639. This magnificent building was completed in 1828 and is the fourth meeting house of the Church.

The United First Parish Church building, considered the finest existing Greek Revival church in New England, is a National Historic Landmark. It was designed by noted architect Alexander Parris, who also designed Quincy Market in Boston.

United First Parish Church, once known as the Old Stone Temple, has a rich history in both the social and religious community.  Known today as the Church of the Presidents, united First Parish Church is the burial place of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams and First Ladies Abigail Adams and Louisa Catherine Adams.

Whether separate or together I am sensible that every year has been productive of many blessings, and that I have great cause for thankfulness.  - Abigail Adams, written to John Adams
Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony 2018

Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony Honoring the Life of John Adams

2016 marked the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s creation of a new Presidential Wreath-laying tradition.

According to this tradition, each year Presidential wreaths are placed at the final resting place of all past (deceased) Presidents on the anniversary of their birth.

As the final resting place of both Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, United First Parish Church (Church of the Presidents) has been the care-taker of this annual presidential commemoration in Quincy for the last 49 years.
